R-Athletics of Grand Rapids, MI has taken the USA Gymnastics slogan “Start here…Go Anywhere” on as our own. Our goal is to give your child the ability to go anywhere in life. Whether your child becomes a gymnast on the Olympic Team, a cheerleader, a basketball player, or a student leader at school gymnastics provides the necessary tools to excel. R Athletes will teach basic to high-level gymnastics skills in a safe environment, using drills and lead-ups to every skill. Each skill will be taught according to the child’s physical and mental abilities, with safety as our highest priority. A well-trained, qualified staff will coach them in a state-of-the-art facility. The classes are organized according to level and age, which will facilitate fun and friendship, with physical education that lasts a lifetime.
Level 1 is a beginner level for school age kids. These classes will open with a fun warm-up and stretch, which will teach them the importance of flexibility. They will learn basic gymnastics skills on each Olympic event: Vault, Bars, Beam, and Floor along with Tramp and Tumble-Track. Progressions and lead-ups are the key factors at this level. Some of the basic skills they will learn include: cartwheels, handstands, bridges, pull-overs, cast, balancing skills, running, jumping, leaping, agility movements….and of course FUN!
The Level 2 classes are still based on the same format and structure as Level 1. Level 2 is considered more of a beginner / intermediate level where gymnastics skills will increase in difficulty, with a continued emphasis on safety. In addition to perfecting Level 1 skills, they will also be working on round-offs, bridge kick-overs, back hip circles, squat-ons, board drills, and slightly more advanced jumping, leaping, agility movements. ….and of course FUN!
Level 3 is an intermediate level that will continue to build on the foundation of the skills mastered in Level 1 and 2. Level 3 classes will begin to add “flight” to some of the skills they have obtained. The girls will learn back and front handspring drills, kip drills, jumping to handstands, leaps, straddle jumps, wolf jumps, agility movements….and of course FUN!
Level 4 is an intermediate / advanced level that continue to build on the skills learned in levels 1-3. These classes follow the same format as the previous levels, with the exception of the increased time in the gym. With basic gymnastics skills accomplished, higher-level skills will now be taught. These skills will include back handsprings, introductory cross tumbling, kips, front handspring vaults, handstands and cartwheels on Beam, combinations of skills and dance elements learned in Level 1-3, the introduction of back and front tucks….and of course FUN!
Level 5 is reserved for advanced gymnasts that have mastered levels 1-4. This class continues to follow the same format and class length as the previous level. The athletes will be taught multiple-skilled tumbling passes, with front and back tucks, layouts, and even twisting. They will begin working on putting bar routines together by combining advanced skills such as kips, cast-to-handstands, and fly-aways. The girls will also apply back walkover and back handspring skills on the balance beam with high-level dance elements on the floor….and of course FUN!
